At Sparkenhoe, we aim for our curriculum to prepare the children for life, equipping them to understand and value who they are and how they relate to others. Our children’s cultural capital, interests and the National Curriculum requirements are built upon by using the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which is compliant with RHE guidance.
Our curriculum has been adapted to ensure that lessons are progressive and are specifically tailored to meet the needs of our children, using emotional literacy and resilience building as a strong focus to help nurture mental and physical health. Key knowledge and understanding is centred on Jigsaw’s suggested topics:
-
Being Me in my World
-
Celebrating Differences
-
Dreams and Goals
-
Healthy Me
-
Relationships
-
Changing Me
Lessons also offer mindfulness, allowing children to develop their emotional awareness, concentration and focus in a whole school approach.
As well as being taught discretely, opportunities for PSHE are built into all other areas of the curriculum and school life to allow knowledge to be retained, revisited, further developed and challenged. Special PSHE days are also held throughout the year to focus on particular aspects of personal and social development.
Relationships and Health Education
At Sparkenhoe we do not teach sex education. We teach the older children about puberty as part of the science curriculum and we write to parents before we teach these lessons. Please see our curriculum documents for more details. If you have any questions, please come and talk to a member of the senior leadership team.
